RFID System for Stock Control

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is technology that allows a business to quickly and accurately identify individual products and components. It can be used to track them all the way through the supply chain from pre-production to point-of-sale – and beyond. RFID systems use radio waves to communicate between an RFID tag and a reader. The tag consists of a microchip attached to an antenna, and the reader can wirelessly read and write data from and to the tag.

Because an RFID tag is essentially a tiny microchip (albeit fitted with a small aerial) it can hold a range of data about the item to which is is attached. RFID tags can be encapsulated in plastic and fixed to a product or its packaging or embedded inside a container or delivery vehicle.

An RFID reader transmits and receives radio signals to and from the RFID tag. The information that is collected can be processed using dedicated computer software from a company such as Digitalquill. Readers can be placed at various positions in a factory or warehouse to record the movement of goods.

How does RFID help with Stock Management?

RFID tagging has many stock control benefits over barcodes:

  • RFID tags can be read remotely at a distance of up to several metres
  • A number of tags can be read at once, so an entire pallet-load of products can be checked simultaneously
  • RFID tags have a unique identification code, that cannot be cloned, so individual products can be tracked effectively

RFID systems can be used:

  • To maintain the right stock level of a product or component and enable Just in Time production
  • To improve stock security. Tag-readers positioned at points of risk, such as the exit to the building, can be used to trigger alarms
  • To improve quality control. They are particularly useful if you stock items with a limited shelf life as the date can be stored and associated with the tag.

The costs of RFID systems have fallen over recent years, and subscription models such as Software as a Service (SaaS) make RFID stock control solutions viable for most businesses, however small.

RFID Systems

RFID systems work through tiny tags consisting of a microchip with an antenna in a compact package. The tag can be attached to almost any object and when its antenna picks up the signals from an RFID reader it can returns data such as its unique serial number. RFID tags do not need a line of sight with the reader and they can easily be incorporated into moving objects.

RFID Systems for Schools

RFID Systems

Schools are starting to use RFID systems in libraries, entry gates and meal halls, making it easier to track students inside the school premises and to reduce the need for them to carry cash. The use of bespoke RFID systems in educational establishments can vastly improve the security and management of the school.

RFID technology in the education sector

Libraries: RFID systems have almost completely replaced barcodes in school libraries. The main advantage over barcodes is that RFID systems do not need to scan every book; multiple books can be read with a single scan and RFID tags can’t be as easily defaced and hard-to-read.

School Entry gates and classrooms: By installing RFID systems at school gates, it is easy to track the attendance of students. Schools always know who is present and who has left the premises. Within classrooms, RFID “gates” can be used in place of the time-consuming practice of taking a register

Meal Halls: RFID cards can be used to ensure that children do not need to carry money and allow parents to keep track of their spending.

RFID Systems for Retail

The retail sector was one of the first to adopt RFID technology. You will be familiar with the RFID “security tags” on big-ticket items to prevent theft. RFID has other uses – for example, it can be used to replace the EAN (Electronic Article Number) or barcode on a product. Imagine a shop where you simply fill your trolley with items and the bill is automatically calculated as you pass through the doors and charged to your account.

RFID Systems

Anyone who has experienced the lengthy queues on Black Friday or at Christmas will recognise the benefits of a smoother system for processing payments. It is possible for a customer to be given a trolley or basket at the entrance or a store with a built-in RFID reader and embedded display. By picking up a product with an RFID tag attached to it, the system could display the name, quantity, and price of the item and then add it to the cart. The data can be sent to the checkouts wirelessly so that by the time the customer reaches the counter the goods can be checked, and payment collected far quicker than by scanning a bar code on each product.

Taken one step further, the bill could be automatically calculated and debited – eventually without any need for human intervention. This is not science fiction, Amazon has already put plans in place for a physical store using just such a concept.
